What is Butter?

Butter is made from milk fat that is included in raw milk kneaded and solidified. In the Ordinance on Milk and Milk products, within the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, butter is designated as “fat bodies from raw milk, milk or certified milk, churned”.

History of Butter

The history of butter is not certain, though there is a record left about butter made in India BC 2000. In BC 500, Herodotus, a historian of ancient Greece wrote down that people put milk in a wooden bucket, shuck it strongly and skimmed off the surface to make butter. The oldest milk product in Japan is called “So” that is what we call butter or cheese now, and it was brought to Japan with Buddhism in the 6th century. In the 18th century, milk product similar to current butter was started to be made. Modern full-scale production of butter started since the Meiji Restoration of 1868.
